Please Slow Down And Enjoy Our Town:
Wellston is located in Norman Township, Manistee County, Michigan. It is a small rural community that is active in a big way. No matter the weather, season, or time of year, our community lends itself to outdoor fun. Steelhead and salmon fishing in the various rivers, streams and lakes is huge. Tippy Dam is internationally known as a fisherman’s dream. The rivers meander throughout the township. Geocaching (similar to scavenger hunts) brings lots and lots of out-of-towners to Wellston. Enjoy canoeing, kayaking and boating on the rivers and lakes. We are surrounded by the Manistee National Forest. We daily see deer, turkey, and owls. At certain times of the year, we see flying squirrels, hummingbirds, turtles crossing the roadways, snakes sunning themselves on the dirt roads, and we hear lots and lots of frogs in early spring.
The smell of woodburning stoves and clean up-north-air confirms you are in an up north small town.
Every Sunday, women gather at the township community center and quilt, knit, or craft. Every month, the Boosters host an activity like chili cook-offs, bake sales, free fishing days, and Thursday evening euchre. The local Boy Scouts meet and make plans on how they can give back to our community. Summer brings swimming, holiday bow shoots, holiday parades, a marathon, a 1/2 marathon, and a 50 mile ultra run.
